Public consultation now underway.
On December 7, 2007, Premier Rodney MacDonald, together with Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour, at the time and David Morse, Minister of Natural Resources, announced details of the province's decision to establish a 14,000 hectare (34,600 acre) candidate Wilderness Area on Crown lands of the Ship Harbour Long Lake area of Halifax Regional Municipality.
This announcement stems from a multi-party agreement between the province, Neenah Paper Ltd. and major environmental organizations.
The province is committed to a public and stakeholder process, leading to designation of a Wilderness Area, with finalized boundaries, within one year.
The public comment period for Step 1 - Information Sharing/Issue Identification is now closed. Public comments are still welcome and will be considered, but may not be included in the Step 1 summary newsletter. Groups and organizations may still request a stakeholder meeting to discuss their interests or concerns:

There will be a second opportunity for public input on Ship Harbour Long Lake Candidate Wilderness Area in the Fall when the proposed wilderness area boundary is announced. The Socioeconomic Analysis will also be released for public comment before this announcement.
