On 11 August 1999, the Nova Scotia Environment & Labour (NSDEL) and the Nova Scotia Dental Association (NSDA) signed a historic agreement (first in North America) to cooperate on implementing the principles of pollution prevention into the regular activities of members of the NSDA. NSDEL recognized that the NSDA is a leading proponent of preventative healthcare and it would be a natural evolution to extend this philosophy to environmental protection by avoiding or minimizing the creation of wastes and the consumption of resources in dental practices. This voluntary partnership was intended to assist the NSDA in making their association a leader in environmental stewardship in Nova Scotia. This MOU has been used as a model for similar agreements by the American Dental Association and several New England states.
