Tank Installations

Domestic fuel oil tanks are to be installed in accordance with the Canadian Standards Association’s CSA B-139, latest recognized edition, “Installation Code for Oil Burning Equipment” and the “National Fire Code of Canada”, latest edition.

Do-it yourself installations are discouraged due to potential damage to the environment, and consequential high costs of cleanup associated with any spill. In fact, many manufacturers now require for warranty purposes that oil tank systems are installed by trained installers.

Installation Guide

The department has developed an Installation and Environmental Management Guide for Aboveground Domestic Oil Tanks in Nova Scotia (PDF: 126k). This Guide promotes proper oil tank system installation and maintenance utilizing existing national standards and industry best management practices.

Trained Installers

The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) has developed a training course for Domestic Oil Tank Installers. This course has been developed in consultation the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Oil Heat Association and the Department of Environment and Labour.

The Department recommends that your new tank system is installed by a trained installer.

For additional information on the NSCC training program, please contact Ross Higgins at (902) 491-4930. For a list of installers who have successfully completed the NSCC training course for oil tank installations, please contact Peggy Jolley at (902) 491-5609.
