Sydney Harbour Access Channel Deepening and Sydport Container Terminal

Description

This is to advise that Laurentian Energy Corporation's (LEC) proposed Sydney Harbour Access Channel Deepening and the Proposed Sydport Container Terminal Project in the Sydport Industrial Park, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, registered for environmental assessment on March 9, 2009, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to dredge a navigation channel in Sydney Harbour, and develop a marine container terminal facility. The Project will involve channel and berth dredging to accommodate Post-Panamax size container vessels, infilling of approximately 72 ha of land and construction and operation of a marine container terminal and on dock Intermodal Container Transfer Facility on the Sydport site. The Terminal is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

Minister's Decision

On April 28, 2009 the Minister of Environment released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:104k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. Opportunities for Public Input

Public comments on the Registration Document were accepted from March 9, 2009 until April 8, 2009. All comments received, including any personal information, will be available to the public at the Department of Environment and Climate Change Library, 5th floor, Halifax Office, 5151 Terminal Road.
