Description
On 29 August 2023, Northumberland Capital Corporation Inc registered the Mount Uniacke Quarry Expansion, Hants County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.
The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to expand the existing quarry from 4 hectares to 40 hectares to allow for the continued production and stockpiling of aggregate used in a wide variety of local construction and infrastructure projects. The proposed undertaking will take place approximately 2.5 km northeast of the community of Mount Uniacke, Municipality of East Hants, Nova Scotia. The access road to the quarry is located off Uniacke Mines Road, approximately 2.3 km northeast of the intersection of Trunk 1 and Uniacke Mines Road (44.915°N, -63.8141°W). The project’s lifespan will be an estimated 30 to 50 years with continued production of an average of 30,000-50,000 tonnes of aggregate annually; based on current market demands. The expected commencement of the proposed project is Fall 2023.
Minister's Decision
On 6 October 2023, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change suspended the environmental assessment of the Mount Uniacke Quarry Expansion in accordance with Section 34(5) of the Environment Act. When the Minister is satisfied Northumberland Capital Corporation Inc is in compliance with the Environment Act and Regulations, the EA process will resume.
