Digby Wind Power Project

Description

This is to advise that on April 30, 2009, a partnership between SkyPower Corp. and Scotian Windfields Inc. registered a wind energy project for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to construct and operate a 30 megawatt (MW) wind energy facility consisting of 20, 1.5 MW wind turbine generators with a transmission line (approximately 10.6 km long) to connect to the existing NSPI electrical grid. This facility is proposed to be located in Gulliver’s Cove, Digby County, Nova Scotia. The Proponent anticipates start of construction by September 2009, pending permits and approvals, with the facility becoming operational in the Spring of 2010. The estimated lifespan of the facility is anticipated to be approximately 20 years.

Minister's Decision

On August 24, 2009 the Minister of Environment released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:103k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditionsPDF Download Link (PDF:32k).

As per the conditions of Approval, the undertaking is limited to the undertaking as described in the Registration Information excluding turbines 12, 15 and 18 in their proposed locations. Relocation of these turbines will require consultation with NSDNR Wildlife Division regarding wildlife connectivity and NSE regarding noise and setbacks.

Public comments on the Registration Document were accepted from April 30, 2009 to May 30, 2009.
