The Environmental Science and Program Management Division promotes sustainable management and protection of the environment through both regulatory and non-regulatory means, including developing and implementing plans, standards, guidelines, and policies for the management and protection of Nova Scotia's air, water and terrestrial resources including protected areas, and by providing regionally-based regulatory approval, inspection, monitoring and enforcement.
The division:
- monitors ambient air resources and develops air quality management plans
- deliveries programs for pollution prevention
- provides information on pests and use of pesticides
- provides resources on handling and storage of petroleum, and other hazardous substances
- coordinates a contaminated sites program
- protects our natural heritage
- assists management of drinking water, groundwater, surface water and wastewater resources
- enables and oversees solid waste resource management strategies and programs
