Minister Officially Opens Porters Lake Elementary School

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

Students and families from Porters Lake and surrounding area are celebrating their new school today, Oct 18.

Education Minister Ramona Jennex and representatives from the Halifax Regional School Board, and Halifax Regional Municipality joined students, teachers, parents and the schools' communities to celebrate the opening of Porters Lake Elementary School.

"Putting kids and learning first means providing students with a school that will enhance learning in the classroom," said Ms. Jennex. "Porters Lake Elementary is not just for the students, it's also a place where families and community members can gather for activities after school hours."

Porters Lake Elementary has been open since September and has 349 students in grades Primary to 6. The new school has a large gymnasium, raised classroom that could act as a stage, community room and studio, and a cafeteria available after hours for use by the community.

"As a former teacher, I am pleased for the students, staff and the community who will have this school, as well as the community centre to serve their needs for generations to come," said Steve Brine, Halifax Regional School Board member for the area. "I want to commend and thank all partners – the province of Nova Scotia, HRM and HRSB – as well as the people from Gaetz Brook to Porters Lake and all communities in between that worked hard to make this dream come true."
