Province to Introduce Bicycle Safety Legislation

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The province is introducing amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act during this session of the House of Assembly that will make roads safer for bicyclists.

The amendments will enhance current bicycle legislation and require drivers to leave one metre of open space between the vehicle and bicyclist when passing.

"Drivers and cyclists have a shared responsibility to pay attention and look out for one another," said Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Bill Estabrooks. "These amendments will help clarify and define the roles and responsibilities of bicyclists and motorists."

The province has been consulting with members of the cycling community on the new legislation to get their input on the amendments and making roads safer for cyclists.

The legislation will be introduced later this session.
