New School for Oxford Students, Community

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

Students are enjoying a modern, safe learning environment at the new Oxford Regional Education Centre in Oxford, Cumberland Co.

Education Minister Marilyn More joined students, parents, teachers, staff, school board and government officials today, May 25, for the school's official opening ceremony.

"Government is committed to making life better for families in every region," said Ms. More. "The families of the Oxford area deserve a first-class school that will provide their children with state-of-the-art learning opportunities.

"Oxford Regional Education Centre will also be a gathering place that has a very positive impact on the community."

The $18-million school for 450 students in Primary to Grade 12 replaces two aging schools -- Oxford Regional Elementary School and Oxford Regional High School.

The high-tech, green building takes advantage of the natural geography and surroundings. It reuses rain water, was built with recycled materials and is surrounded with low-irrigation grounds.

The local community also raised funds for fitness and community rooms.

"We are very proud of our building -- it is beautiful, bright and state-of-the-art in design and technology," said Judy Davis, principal of Oxford Regional Education Centre. "We are even more proud of our students and staff in the way they've all come together and adjusted as a cohesive team and learning community.

"It is those within that make it a wonderful place."

The province plans to build 16 new schools under the current school capital construction plan.
