The importance of the mining industry to Nova Scotia will be showcased during the 33rd annual Mining Matters conference at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax, Monday, Nov. 16, and Tuesday, Nov. 17.
"Mining has long been a pillar of Nova Scotia's economy and the industry continues to grow and evolve thanks to advances in environmental practices and a more socially responsible approach," said Natural Resources Minister John MacDonell. "This conference will demonstrate where the mining industry is, where it's going and what it means to this province."
Mining Matters is organized by the Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the Mining Association of Nova Scotia, the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Prospectors Association. The theme of this year's event is Towards a Sustainable Mining Industry and will feature experts and educators on sustainability and the mining industry.
The opening day of the event includes poster displays, technical sessions, guest speakers and a panel discussion. A luncheon will feature guest speaker Dennis Jones, director of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. Mr. MacDonell will host the reception and industry awards ceremony from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission to the technical sessions and to the exhibit area is free.
The itinerary for the second day features Atlantic Canadian exploration and mining companies with presentations and guest speakers describing activities and potential investment opportunities. The guest speakers for the luncheon are John Decoste, environmental engineer for Lafarge Canada, and Wade Lewis, a conservation specialist with Ducks Unlimited.
"Mining does matter as we build modern lives," said Peter Oram, president of the Mining Association of Nova Scotia. "We take Nova Scotia's minerals and put them into action. This conference is a great way for everyone to learn about how innovative the mining industry is and how we provide the materials we all need to enjoy our lives."
