Nova Scotia families will get extra help with electricity costs starting today, Oct. 1.
The province is fulfilling its commitment to remove the provincial portion of the HST from home electricity charges.
"We are committed to making the necessities of life more affordable for Nova Scotia families," said Deputy Premier Frank Corbett. "In the face of economic challenges and rising home energy costs, these rebates are important to help people heat their homes."
The Your Energy Rebate program now applies to all residential electricity used on and after Oct. 1, as well as the base charges. Electricity used before today did not receive the full rebate.
Nova Scotians will see the full effect of the rebate on December electricity bills.
Government wanted to re-instate the Your Energy Rebate program before the heating season began.
"We said we would make life more affordable for today's families and this program does just that," said Mr. Corbett.
The Your Energy Rebate program will help almost 400,000 families throughout the province.
The cost of the program will be covered through savings identified throughout government.
