Premier Salutes Notable Nova Scotian

Barry Barnet, Minister of African Nova Scotia Affairs, on behalf of Premier Rodney MacDonald, expressed sadness today, July 25, at the passing of Pearleen Oliver.

Mrs. Oliver was a civil rights leader who spoke out strongly against segregation and discrimination. During the 1940s, she led the fight to break down barriers that prevented black women from being admitted into education programs like nursing in Nova Scotia.

In addition, Mrs. Oliver was an author and a respected church leader who became the first female Moderator of the African Baptist Association.

An honorary doctor of letters from St. Mary's University and an honorary doctorate from Mount Saint Vincent University were bestowed on Mrs. Oliver in recognition of her many contributions to Nova Scotia.

"Mrs. Oliver was an outstanding advocate for women and for African Nova Scotians," said Mr. Barnet. "She has left all Nova Scotians with a wonderful legacy that will live on forever."

Mr. Barnet extended condolences to Mrs. Oliver's family, colleagues and many friends.
