Celebrate World Ocean Day

Nova Scotians can celebrate World Ocean Day on Friday, June 6, by attending an interactive exhibition on the Halifax waterfront.

Representatives of government, industry, academic and other organizations will gather to raise awareness of the important role oceans play in everyday life.

"Nova Scotia has a long, historical connection to the ocean and we are all affected by it in some way," said Ron Chisholm, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "We depend on the ocean for many things, including food, employment and recreation activities, so we must ensure that it is protected and conserved."

Ocean Day activities will be held on the wharf behind the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be interactive and educational exhibits and displays, a touch tank, demonstrations, and face painting. Admission to the CSS Acadia is free. The event will take place rain or shine.

June 8 was first identified as World Oceans Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The theme this year is, helping our climate/helping our ocean.
