Community Groups, Municipalities Receive $266,000 to Support Seniors

A space for seniors and preschoolers to do crafts, games and other learning activities together, is just one of 42 projects being funded by the Department of Seniors.
The activity space in Spencer House in Halifax, designed by Nova Scotia College of Art and Design students, is one of the projects to support seniors that will receive a portion of $266,000 in funding, Len Goucher, acting Minister of Seniors, announced today, April 18.
Twenty-eight non-profit organization projects will be supported through the Positive Aging Fund and 14 projects will be co-funded by municipalities through the Age-Friendly Communities Program.
"The investments we're making today will benefit seniors in communities across Nova Scotia for years to come," said Mr. Goucher. "Our goal is to address the needs of the province's aging population, and we're committed to supporting innovative ideas and community-based solutions."
The Positive Aging Fund helps nonprofit community organizations create projects that advance Nova Scotia's Strategy for Positive Aging. The strategy is a long-term guide for planning for the aging population, with a focus on the health, well-being and community participation of Nova Scotia seniors. Successful applicants receive up to $10,000 for projects.
The Age Friendly Communities Program helps municipalities create or adapt structures and services to be accessible and inclusive of seniors so they are able to lead healthy, active lives. Participating municipalities share the costs of the projects, up to $5,000.
"Improving the age-friendliness of communities is a top priority for government," said Mr. Goucher. "We're seeing large and small communities working to improve the lives of seniors, and those efforts are to be commended."
Mr. Goucher also recognized the efforts of Seniors Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson , specifically for championing seniors issues and initiating the development of the two grant programs. at the Department of Seniors.
The Department of Seniors received more than 150 applications for funding under the grant programs. Applicants will have another opportunity to apply in the fall.
