International Women's Day Celebration at New YWCA Women's Space

A discussion of ways to increase the number of women involved in community and public life will headline Opening Doors, a celebration of International Women's Day, March 8.
The event, to be held in the new Women's Community Space at the YWCA Halifax, 1233 Barrington St., will include speakers from the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, YWCA, Women in Local Government Project, Equal Voice Nova Scotia, and Women's Work Project of Mahone Bay.
"Community groups contribute to our well-being and strengthen the social fabric of our province," said Judy Streatch, acting Minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. "By working together, we can open doors to new opportunities for women. YWCA is a partner in the movement toward equality, fairness and dignity for Nova Scotia women."
Founded in 1874, YWCA Halifax is the province's oldest women's group and the only YWCA in Nova Scotia. The organization works with local and national women's groups and other partners. It also delivers innovative services for women, including the Encore Exercise Program for survivors of breast cancer.
"We're a learning organization. We reach out to women for help and they reach out to us," said Barb Hart, president of YWCA Halifax. "Women's organizations work in partnership with women community leaders. With support from government and business partners, we're building stronger, healthier communities together."
Since 1908, International Women's Day has recognized work challenges and accomplishments of women around the world. This year, the advisory council's theme is Strong Hands, Strong Minds -- Working for Equality, Fairness and Dignity. The theme reflects the ways women contribute through paid and unpaid work, and recognizes partnerships among community groups and government.
