Investment in Riverview Adult Residential Centre
The Nova Scotia government is investing almost $19 million to renovate the Riverview Residential Centre and build three new community homes in Pictou County.
Premier Rodney MacDonald and Community Services Minister Judy Streatch announced the renovation and new construction today, Aug. 7, in Riverton.
The premier also announced a replacement home in Mabou, Inverness Co., will open this summer and plans have begun for a new home in Plymouth, Pictou Co., near New Glasgow.
The Riverview Adult Residential Centre will undergo a major renovation that will transform the centre into a modern setting to better meet the varied needs of residents. Along with renovations to the existing building, a new 24-bed wing will be constructed, as well as three smaller community homes, which will allow residents to live more independently.
"Families can rest assured their loved ones are going to be receiving care in a good home for a long time to come, in this community and others," said Premier MacDonald. "I'm also pleased to share good news for two other communities. We are building replacement homes in Mabou and in New Glasgow to better meet the needs of the Nova Scotians who rely on this type of care."
Ms. Streatch said, "I've seen first-hand the staff's commitment and dedication to the residents. It's easy to see that this is truly a home, where the highest level of care is lovingly provided."
She said the three new community homes will allow those residents to live in a more independent and less structured environment, close to their families and communities.
"Today's announcement will ensure there is a strong continuum of care for individuals with special needs whether they live in the community or require 24-hour intensive care and support, said Nancy Clarke, CEO of Riverton Home Corporation. "The project will provide modern equipment and an updated environment that will facilitate greater responsiveness to client needs as they change over time"
When completed, Riverview will have private rooms for 83 residents. The three new community homes will each be home to eight people.
The Riverview Adult Residential Centre provides support to individuals who require supervision and assistance with daily activities, 24 hours a day. The centre employs 86 people.
