Construction Contract Awarded for Truro School

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

About 900 Primary to Grade 5 students, teachers, and staff in the Truro area will enjoy two new, safe and healthy schools next year.

"The province continues to invest in safe, healthy schools across the province," said Education Minister Karen Casey. "This investment will give Truro's youngest students a great start at learning."

Maxim 2000 Construction Inc. has been awarded the construction contract for the new elementary school in Salmon River. The successful bid was $8.1 million. School construction will begin this spring, with 360 students expected to occupy the school in September 2008.

The new elementary school in Salmon River will bring students together from Alice Street and Salmon River schools.

A call for proposals for designing the new elementary school near Curtis Drive has closed and proposals are being evaluated. The Curtis Drive elementary school is an $8.5-million investment by the province, and will serve about 560 students. Construction is expected to begin in the summer, with occupancy by September 2008.

The Curtis Drive elementary school will bring students together from Princess Margaret Rose, St. Mary's, Willow Street, and Douglas Street schools.

These two elementary schools, with Truro Junior High School, complete the major capital construction work in Truro for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.

The schools are being built through the province's eight-year, $400-million capital construction program. The schools were announced in 2003.
