New Minister Responsible for Military Relations Announced

Nova Scotia will recognize and support its long-standing relationship with Canada's military by naming a Minister responsible for Military Relations.

Premier Rodney MacDonald announced today, Oct. 30, that Murray Scott is the first minister appointed to the post.

"The Canadian military holds tremendous historic, social and economic significance in Nova Scotia," said Premier MacDonald. "This new position will serve as our direct link to both the Department of National Defence and military personnel in our province."

The minister will oversee the province's Defence Forum, an interdepartmental committee of provincial staff who promote and support relationships with the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces.

The goals of the forum are: to build Nova Scotia's capacity to deal with military issues and opportunities, sustain a strong relationship with the Canadian Forces and Department of National Defence, and help Nova Scotia work towards a stronger military presence in the province.

"Our service men and women play an important role in our communities, whether through active combat overseas or helping during disasters like Hurricane Juan or the aftermath of the Swiss Air tragedy," said Mr. Scott. "I am honoured to have been given this role and new opportunity to support our military and their families."

Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to designate a minister responsible for military relations and to have a Defence Forum of provincial officials.

"I welcome any initiative that supports our sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen who work so diligently every day to ensure that Canada and Canadians continue to be safe and secure both at home and abroad," said Gen. Rick Hillier, Chief of Defence Staff.

There are about 14,500 military personnel, reservists and civilian employees in Nova Scotia. The Canadian Forces spend more than $1 billion each year on salaries, operations and facilities in Nova Scotia.
