Construction to Start on New Port Clyde Bridge

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

Construction will start Monday, Sept. 26, on a new bridge at Port Clyde, on the Lighthouse Route (Route 309) in Shelburne County.

The crossing will be closed during construction of the one-lane bridge. A detour will be available on Highway 103 until the project's completion in mid-December.

Because of the importance of this bridge to the community of Port Clyde, the contractor is using new construction techniques that will result in the bridge being ready in less than half the time it normally takes to build a traditional replacement bridge. The Department of Transportation and Public Works has also worked closely with local representatives to determine the best time to schedule this project.

The existing bridge at Port Clyde was built in the early 1890s. It had to be closed for repairs in November 2004 and, since then, has been closed to large truck traffic. The new bridge will be able to carry all modern highway loads.
