Family Law Information Centre Opens in Halifax

Justice

Clients of family court will have the opportunity to learn more about the court process thanks to the opening today, April 15, of a Family Law Information Centre in Halifax.

The centre will make free legal information available to clients. It will also provide basic assistance with such family law topics as court processes and forms, how to find a lawyer, and alternatives to court.

Staff at the centre will not provide direct legal advice. Free family law information clinics will be held, however, and, when necessary, staff will make referrals to community agencies and programs.

"Sometimes, clients of the family court are intimidated by the complexity of court procedure," said Justice Minister Michael Baker. "This centre will help people educate themselves and is another step in creating a more accessible court system in Nova Scotia."

The centre will be located in the Supreme Court, Family Division, 3380 Devonshire Ave., Halifax.

A similar Family Law Information Centre opened at the Sydney Justice Centre in January, 2005.
