Site Selected For Northside School

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

A site on Pleasant Street in North Sydney has been chosen for the new northside elementary-junior high school, Department of Education officials said today, Jan. 5.

The department approved the site -- also known as the school steering team's site number two -- subject to an environmental assessment, a report on ground conditions (subsidence), and negotiations with landowners.

The selection was made after extensive consultation with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board, the community school steering team, and the Department of Transportation and Public Works, which will manage the construction project.

Education Minister Jamie Muir thanked the board and community volunteers for their contribution.

"They've done a great job," said Mr. Muir. "I look forward to their continued contribution as we work through the details of the final design of this new school."

Construction on the $14-million project is scheduled to begin in May 2006 and completion is targeted for December 2007.
