Appointments to Arts and Culture Partnership Council

Two new members and two returning members have been appointed to
the Nova Scotia Arts and Culture Partnership Council.
The new members are Donald Julien of Millbrook, Colchester Co.
and Karen Diadick Casselman of Cheverie, Hants Co. Jenni
Blackmore of Seaforth, Halifax Co. and Donald Ferguson of Glace
Bay have been appointed as returning members. These appointments
are for three years. The council members replace members
appointed for one-year terms.
Donald Julien is executive director of the Confederacy of
Mainland Mi'kmaq and a current member of the Nova Scotia Museum's
board of governors. He has an extensive working background in
both the Mi'kmaq and arts and culture communities.
Karen Diadick Casselman is a visual artist and teacher and has
travelled the world presenting and teaching craft dyeing. She has
written a number of books on crafts and monographs. Karen also
has an extensive volunteer background.
"These volunteers bring a wide range of experience and enthusiasm
to their work," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Heritage. "They are very active in their communities
and in developing and promoting the benefits of a healthy arts
and culture sector."
The partnership council began operating in 2003. In consultation
with those involved in arts and culture, its members provide
advice to guide the department's ongoing investment in Nova
Scotia's artists, cultural industries and cultural activities.
"I feel confident that we can provide leadership, program
innovation and partnership opportunities to enhance the arts and
culture community in Nova Scotia," says council chair Paul
Gallant. "This partnership council is on the cutting edge in
Canada, in terms of providing a foundation for growth in the
sector and now we have to go out there and make it work."
The council members represent a cross-section of Nova Scotians
with geographic and cultural diversity and provide a broad range
of experience in the culture sector. The executive of the council
includes: chair, Paul Gallant of Cheticamp; vice chair, Terry
Kelly of Halifax and; secretary, Ken Schwartz of Canning.
Other council members include: Joella Foulds, Southside
Boularderie, Victoria Co.; Wayne MacGillivary, Pictou; Donna
Wellard, Truro; Laura MacNutt, Dartmouth; and Dianne Coish and
Marcel McKeough, representing the culture division, Department of
Tourism, Culture and Heritage.
The council is currently seeking a representative from the
southern region of the province and welcomes interested
volunteers to submit a resume and letter of application to the
attention of Peggy Turner, at P.O. Box 456, Halifax, B3J 2R5, by
