Chester Plebiscite Date Set

Chester residents will go to the polls on Feb. 22, to determine whether their community will become a town.

Janet Willwerth, the province's chief electoral officer, has confirmed the Feb. 22 date for the plebiscite, which is required by legislation passed in the fall.

Advance polls for the proposed vote on town status will be held on Feb. 15 and Feb. 18.

Individuals who are on the electoral list in polling district No. 3 of the Municipality of the District of Chester will receive written notification. Other eligible residents may be added to the list during a revision period, or at the time of voting.

Detailed information on the plebiscite will be available from the returning officer, Joe Gallant, who is expected to open an office at the Chester railway station on Jan. 15. Mr. Gallant is currently the returning officer in the provincial electoral district of Timberlea-Prospect.

There will be an opportunity for a group in favour of and a group opposed to the question of town incorporation to participate in the election process, by campaigning or by having agents at the polling stations.
