Environmental Health Centre Review Set for May

Health (to Jan. 2011)

The province will conduct a review of the Environmental Health Centre in late May, fulfilling a government commitment.

The review, which will be conducted between May 24 and May 25, will focus on the scope of the centre's research activities and on how its programs and services are meeting the health needs of Nova Scotians under its care.

"The review will identify strengths and weaknesses in the current structure, mandate and accountability of the Environmental Health Centre," said Health Minister Jamie Muir. "We remain concerned about the health care of all Nova Scotians and we welcome recommendations from the review team."

The three-member review team includes Dr. Irvin Broder, professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Robert McMurty, Cameron visiting chair of Health Canada, and Dr. Robert Peterson, associate director general of Health Canada's Therapeutic Products Programme.

These reviewers were drawn from a list of nationally and internationally recognized medical experts recommended by academics and clinicians from across Canada.

While in Nova Scotia the review team will tour the Environmental Health Centre and meet with staff. They will also consult with people receiving care through the clinic and with other stakeholders.

Stakeholder groups are encouraged to submit written submissions to the Department of Health by Monday, May 15.

The Environmental Health Centre opened at its Fall River location in May of 1997. The Department of Health provides funding to Dalhousie University for administration of the centre.

About 660 people are currently receiving care at the centre

A report is expected by early summer.
