Services to Mark Flight 111 Anniversary

Lorne Clarke, chair of the Flight 111 Memorial Advisory Committee, today announced the memorial services planned for Sept. 1-2 -- the first anniversary of the Swissair Flight 111 tragedy.

"We want the families to feel comfortable coming back to our province during what must be a difficult time for them," said Mr. Clarke.

More than 800 members of the victims' families are expected to be in Nova Scotia during this time.

The schedule is as follows:

SEPT. 1:

• Interment and memorial dedication at the Bayswater site. The ceremony will be private at the request of family members.

• Dedication of the memorial at Whalesback, Peggy's Cove. Representatives from the agencies and organizations that played a role in the rescue, recovery and other operations will take part in this ceremony.

SEPT. 2:

• Commemorative gathering at the World Trade and Convention Centre, Halifax. This gathering is an opportunity for family members to meet Nova Scotians who took part in the search, recovery and other operations following the tragedy.

• An interfaith candlelight memorial service open to the public, Citadel Hill, Halifax. The service is sponsored by the local Christian, Jewish and Islamic communities in collaboration with the International Association of the Families of Swissair Flight 111.
