Sport and Recreation Commission

The province's top female lifeguards compete in the 2nd annual Nova Scotia All-Woman Lifeguard Competition on July 20 at Rissers Beach Provincial Park in Petite Riviere, Lunenburg Co.

Female lifeguards compete in either team or individual divisions, vieing for the top spot in up to eight different events including the run-swim-run, ironwoman and beach flags. Registration is at noon and the day's events begin at 1 p.m. The competition is intended to promote and encourage the participation of women in the sport of lifesaving.

Last year's competition, the first to be held in Nova Scotia, was a success. Nancy Witty of Wolfville and her partner Heather Goodfellow of Halifax combined to win five of the eight events.

Other notable female lifeguards competing this year are Giselle Figueiredo, winner of the ocean swim event last summer, and Lori Borgal. Ms. Borgal won the women's open water swim event last September at the 26th annual Nova Scotia Surf Lifeguarding Championships. This year, Ms. Figueiredo will compete in the team division with Amy Clattenburg, and Ms. Borgal will compete in the team division with Hannah Fraser. These women are from Halifax.

Other lifeguards competing this year include: Jenna Allen, Bridgewater; Liz Bishara, Yarmouth; Pam Connell, Yarmouth; Miranda Corkum, Kingston; Brooke Delaney, Pictou; Jenna Durling, Prospect; Catrin Hughes, Aylesford; Brianne Lauzier, Halifax; Sarah Wilkie, Halifax; and Dayna Wojcik, Hammonds Plains.

Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each event and overall trophies are awarded to the team and individual acquiring the most points throughout the competition. Award presentations take place on the beach following the last event of the day.

The Nova Scotia All-Women Lifeguard Competition is operated by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Lifesaving Society, Nova Scotia branch.
