The province of Nova Scotia is taking steps to reduce the risk of exposing our livestock and wildlife to Foot and Mouth Disease. We are working with operators and industry, and we want residents and visitors to help too.

NOVA SCOTIA - As a favourite destination for thousands of international travelers, an exporter of various agricultural products, and a major seaport for the country, we must work together to Keep Nova Scotia Safe.

Provincial Action

We are monitoring the disease eradication efforts in Europe through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). There are co-ordinated efforts between government departments, CFIA, and the farming, natural resource and tourist industries to ensure residents, farmers, tourist operators, and visitors are well informed. Working together will be crucial if the government needs to implement its Foot and Mouth Disease emergency response plan.

Provincial facilities have standard precautionary measures, such as:
  • signage stating precautions at facilities
  • foot baths / mats
  • restricted access to livestock and wildlife

Some may implement more or fewer measures, depending on their level of risk. As well, provincial staff who visit farms have enhanced their bio-security protocols.

How You Can Help

Follow the guidelines suggested by the CFIA.

  • If you plan to visit a Nova Scotia zoological facility, petting zoo or farm, call the operators first to learn about their protocols.
  • If your travel plans include a Foot and Mouth affected area, please check with the CFIA Web site or toll-free number for advice.
  • If you operate a zoological facility, farm or tourist establishment in a rural area and wish to learn more, contact the appropriate department:
