HARVESTING

Harvesting in some form is required in most of the silvicultural treatments already mentioned. In woodlots that have not been managed for a number of years, there should be a higher percentage of what is called conventional harvesting or clearcutting carried out. This is due to a variety of reasons:

  1. The well stocked stands are mature to overmature and are losing volume to natural mortality.

  2. Areas are understocked because of past cutting practices.

  3. What is growing on the site is of such poor quality that the most practical action is to remove what is present and replace it with a better crop.
