- Receives applications for mineral and petroleum rights and issues and registers licences or leases
- Registers Prospectors and issues Prospector Identification Cards
- Registers any documents affecting licences
- Receives and reviews statements of exploration expenditures and assessment reports that pertain to the renewal of licences
- Receives applications for and receives annual reports from mineral producers (lessees and non mineral registrants)
- Receives notifications of drilling for exploration purposes
- Receives applications for and records excavation registrations and issues letters of authorization
- Maintains maps showing the disposition of lands under petroleum agreement, licences, leases or non mineral registration
- Processes applications for petroleum, coal gas, underground gas storage rights and requests for Oak Island Treasure licences
- Receives and tabulates information concerning production and employment in Nova Scotia mines and quarries
- Provides assistance regarding the procedures for obtaining and maintaining the required licences and forms
- Provides information on past exploration and mining activities
- Receives all fees, payments-in-lieu of work, bonds and determines the amount of bonds
- Handles the sale of claim reference maps and copies of legislation
- Monitors mineral exploration activities in Nova Scotia
