Hurricane Clean Up Update

Colchester County:

McElmons Pond
Staff are presently making arrangements to remove blowdown and hazardous trees from the trail. Picnic area of the park is open for public use.

Halifax County

Cole Harbour Heritage Park
$160,000 tender for the clean up of extensive blowdown along trails and woodlands within the park has been awarded to R. MacLean Forestry. Expect some wooded areas of the park to have access restrictions. Clean up will include allowances for fire management issues on lands adjacent to residential development.

Cole Harbour Salt Marsh Trail
$ 36,000 in safety hazards caused by damaged vegetation have been removed. Tender for trail reconstruction under review. Work expected to commence in August.

Conrad Beach
$18,000 in repairs to the beach entry bridge have been completed and park is open to public use.

Crystal Crescent Beach
$46,500 in repairs to beach entry points and board walks completed.

Dollar Lake
New Age Landscape Construction Ltd completed the $9825 contract. All other repairs are completed. Additional tree clean up along trails is under review for this fall.

Lawrencetown
$14,300 in initial repairs to board walks completed. Additional repairs are under review.

Long Lake
Vegetation removal required to secure the water control structures has been completed. Ongoing un authorized tree removal is occurring. The property will be assessed in the near future by staff to determine any additional clean up requirements. Clean up efforts to date have focussed on developed parks.

McNabs and Lawlor Islands
R MacLean Forestry has completed the $342,000 contract to remove vegetation along trails, roads and recreational areas. The management specifications required to proceed with the tendering for clean up of extensive blowdown in the woodlands will be issued by late summer or early fall. Communications from CFIA have indicated that the removal of spruce is critical in the management of the Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle. Additional site repairs to Garrison Pier and the Garrison Road will occur over the next couple of months. Further vegetation clean up in the interior forest area may cause periodic trial closures.

Martinique Beach
$ 28,000 in repairs to beach entry points completed.

McCormacks Beach
$73,000 contract to ALM Environmental to repair the boardwalk has been completed.

Oakfield
$31,000 contract to R. MacLean Forestry Ltd of Antigonish has been completed. Park open for normal use.

Porters Lake
A $46,750 contract with R. MacLean Forestry Ltd of Antigonish is completed with some debris removal remaining. Concept plan has been developed and construction details are being finalized for future tendering. Staff are also working to receive clarification on funding eligibility through the federal relief program. Current estimates for reconstruction are $1,500,000. Park is closed for the season and will re-open in May 2005.

Queensland Beach
$14,900 in road way and infrastructure repairs have been completed.

Rainbow Haven
Terra Marine $ 65,000 contract to repair roadway and bridge is completed. $9500 repairs to summer beach access points have been completed. Winter access points remain to be completed.

Shubenacadie Wildlife Park
Clean up of damaged vegetation continues, however, public access to the wildlife compounds is not expected to be restricted.
