The Atlantic Provinces Hunter Education Course in Nova Scotia is provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources through the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters. The course is taught by volunteer instructors who are affiliated with non-profit groups, such as Ground Search and Rescue and Wildlife Associations. The volunteer instructors schedule courses at various locations throughout the Province based on student applications forwarded to them by the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
(The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is a pre-requisite to this course.)
The Hunter Education Course includes instruction in ecology and wildlife management, hunter ethics and landowner relations, laws and regulations, basic first aid and survival skills, and field techniques. Students complete a written test; the pass mark is 80%.
Courses are offered based on student demand and instructor availability. Courses are normally held in the fall and winter months and less frequently during the spring and summer. To find out when and where the Hunter Education Course will be held in your area, contact the Hunter Education Instructors in your area. Mature students (over the age of 18) have two other options for completing the course, register for home study (Register) or online access.

Resident Nova Scotians over the age of 18 who's hunting privileges have not been suspended, now have the option to take the Atlantic Provinces Hunter Education Course on-line .
Persons over age 18 who wish to complete the course must download and review the student manual and complete the Independent Study Guides found at the end of each of the 6 lessons as part of the course requirements.
Once an applicant has completed the Independent Study Guides and is ready to write the exam they contact the nearest Department of Natural Resources office (or a certified Hunter Education instructor) to schedule an appointment to do so. When they arrive for their appointment they must bring the following 3 items: the completed Independent Study Guides, proof of having completed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the appropriate course fee.
An application form must be filled out in advance and the $20 course fee remitted prior to course commencement. Upon completion of the quizzes, persons who choose this option will be able to write the Hunter Education Course examination by contacting the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters to schedule an appointment to write the exam with a certified Hunter Education Instructor/Examiner.
