Hunter Education Opportunities
in Nova Scotia

Q. How much does it cost?
A. There is a $25.00 fee to take the Nova Scotia Hunter Education course regardless of how you participate (classroom, online or home study).

Q. Who do I contact, if I have questions regarding course content?
A. Any questions about the Nova Scotia online/home study course, may be directed through the NSDNR Hunter Education Coordinator.

Q. How old do I have to be to take the Hunter Education course?
A. You must be at least 12 years of age.

Q. How old do I have to be to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course?
A. It is recommended that you are 12 years of age (or older).

Q. What must I do as a new hunter to hunt in Nova Scotia this fall?

  • Complete and pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (part A, which is a prerequisite for part B)
  • Complete and pass the Nova Scotia Hunter Education course (part B)If under the age of 18, obtain a Federal Minors Firearm License 1-800-731-4000(Ext.6505)
  • Purchase your hunting license (available from any vendor ) PLEASE NOTE: if you are a minor a parent or guardian must accompany you to purchase your license.

Q. How do I register for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course?
Contact the Community College nearest you.

Q. How do I registerfor the N.S. Hunter Education Course?
Application forms can be downloaded at http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/hunt/facapp1.htm

  • application forms can be obtained from any N.S. Department of Natural Resources office, any public library in Nova Scotia or through any Access Nova Scotia office.
  • completed applications are forwarded to the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers & Hunters together with your application fee. You will be contacted by an instructor, with the date and location of your course.

Q. What if I'm unable to attend the classroom program for the N.S. Hunter Education Course, is there another method for me to participate?

If you are a mature student (18 years of age or older) and unable to participate in a classroom program for the N.S. Hunter Education Course, you have the option of either participating in our home study program or our online program. You may also qualify to challenge the Canadian Firearms Safety which will permit you to complete the practical and written test without attending the classroom portion of the course.

Q. How much does it cost to take these courses?

  • $50.00 to register for the Canadian Firearm Safety Course
  • $25.00 to register for the N.S. Hunter Education Course.

Q. If I have just moved into the province of Nova Scotia and have taken a hunter education course elsewhere, what do I have to do?

Please call 1-900-565-7418 to provide details. Then mail proof of successfully completing a hunter education course elsewhere, and proof of residency together with $6.25 plus tax ($7.06) to:

The Wildlife Resources Card will be mailed to you. You must produce this card to the vendor, when purchasing your Nova Scotia Hunting License.

Q. Is my FAC (Firearm Acquisition Certificate) still valid?

These certificates are valid until they expire, but then you will be required to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

Q. How long does it take to obtain a Minor's Permit?

Once you have completed the paper work and mailed it off, it will take approximately 3 weeks to receive it.

Q. How much does a Minor's Permit cost?

The cost of a Minor's Permit is $10.00 per year for a maximum of 3 years. at which time it can be renewed if still required.

Q. When are the Canadian Firearms Safety Courses normally held?

These courses run all year with a minimum of 1 course per month being held at each Community College. If demand is high then more courses are put on.

Q. What must I do if I wish to hunt with a bow in Nova Scotia?

You must take a bowhunting course through "Bowhunter Instructors Association of Nova Scotia" (BIANS). The cost to take this course is $40.00 and applications must be received by August 1st in order to be processed in the current year. Applications can be downloaded Bowhunting Education Application Form or are available from the nearest Department of Natural Resources office.
