DEFINITIONS

ACQUIRE
Is intended to refer to the purchase, exchange, trade or other means by which a registered buyer obtains primary forest products (includes primary forest products obtained from a registered buyer's own land).

CHIPS

As a primary forest product:

energy chips - wood fibre acquired in chipped form and intended for use as a fuel

pulp quality chips - wood fibre acquired in chipped form and intended for conversion into wood pulp

As a secondary forest product:

pulp quality chips - wood fibre produced for sale in chipped form, having characteristics suitable for conversion into wood pulp

other chipped wood - wood fibre produced for sale in chipped form intended for uses other than conversion into wood pulp (excludes sawdust and slabs).

CROWN LAND
Land under the administration and control of the Minister of Natural Resources.

EXPORT
Movement of a primary forest product outside Nova Scotia, including to other provinces as well as to other countries.

EXPORTER
Person or business which owns a primary forest product at the time it leaves Nova Scotia as an export

FEDERAL LAND
All or any part of land under the administration and control of Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada.

FIREWOOD (PFP)
Roundwood that is sold to the consumer for use as a heating fuel.

HOG WOOD (SFP)
Any woody non-chipped residue which is produced by a wood processing facility and intended for sale.

INDUSTRIAL LAND
Land owned by a person or business which owns a wood processing facility where primary forest products are processed.

LUMBER (SFP)
Any products sawn from roundwood. May be further broken down by dimension or other characteristics. Any specialty products such as studs, boxwood, laths, mine timbers or packs, shingles, barrel staves, railway ties, etc. should be specified in the Other category.

PITPROPS, POLES AND PILINGS (SFP)
Roundwood which is peeled and sold as a secondary forest product.

PRIMARY FOREST PRODUCTS (PFP)
Commercially valuable raw materials obtained from trees. Includes the bole, as well as tops, branches, and limbs if they are removed from the forest for use.

PULPWOOD (PFP)
Any roundwood that is intended for processing into wood pulp.

REGISTERED BUYER
is an owner or operator of a wood processing facility in the province which processes primary forest products.

  • exports primary forest products from the province.
  • imports primary forest products into the province.
  • sells or acquires for sale more than 1000 m3 solid (454 cords) of primary forest products as a fuel (or)
  • acquires primary forest products for producing energy.

SAWLOGS (PFP)
Any primary forest product that is intended for processing into sawn wood products (i.e. lumber).

STUDWOOD (PFP)
Small sawlogs intended to be sawn into small dimensional lumber.

VENEER LOGS (PFP)
Any roundwood in log form which is intended for conversion into veneer products rather than sawn into lumber

WOOD PULP (SFP)
A product made from wood fibre that is compressed into thin sheets for remanufacture into paper or other similar product.
