Forest Ecosystem Classification

The Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC) is currently under development. It is a tool to define and describe forest and woodland communities. The Forest Ecosystem Classification provides information about site, soil moisture and nutrients, and tree and understory plant composition. The site-specific classification creates an ecological link between stand level and landscape level classification (provincial ELC). It offers an ecological framework from which to develop management interpretations, guidelines, and prescriptions allowing management experience to be applied to similar stands in different areas across the province.

In 2003 a forest ecosystem classification guide was developed in association with the Nova Forest Alliance (NFA). It contains identification keys, descriptive information, photographs, and management interpretations for 10 ecotypes, 28 vegetation types, and 16 soil types found within the Nova Forest Alliance area.
