Who Needs This Permit?
Anyone who wants to light a fire in or within 1000 feet (304 metres) of the woods in Nova Scotia during the fire season. (Counties of Yarmouth, Digby, Shelburne, Kings, Annapolis, Queens, and Lunenburg April 1 - October 15, all other counties April 15 - October 15, all dates inclusive).
Some municipalities may require an additional permit or may prohibit any burning.
Where can you get this Permit and / or further information?
- Any of the Local or Area Offices of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.

Application Forms & Process:
Application can be made at the nearest Local or Area Office of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.
An inspection of site may be required before approval is given.
Conditions considered necessary for the effective control of the permitted fire may be imposed.
If all requirements are met, the applicant may be issued a permit.
Waiting Period:
Immediate to 1 week
Expiry & Renewal:
1) Industrial : The permit is valid for the duration of the job. It is not renewable.
2) Domestic : The permit is valid for a maximum of 2 weeks. It is not renewable.

Additional Information:
1) The permit may be cancelled orally or in writing at any time by a Conservation Officer.
2) The applicant must have the permit before the fire is started.
3) The applicant must take precaution to prevent a fire from spreading.
4) Every person in charge of a burning operation shall maintain certain firefighting equipment prescribed in the regulations.
5) In some counties, a permit may be obtained from an authorized fire department.
