1999 Woodlot Owner of The Year.
A
provincial awards committee has chosen a man from Virginia East
in Annapolis Co. as the provincial winner. Harold Hearn was chosen
as the best woodlot owner from six regional winners by a three
member judging panel. The award will be presented to Mr. Hearns
on his woodlot on Saturday, September 18. A field day was held
that day to give other woodlot owners and the public a chance
to meet Harold and tour his woodlot.
This is the tenth year for the prestigious award which recognizes
outstanding achievements in woodlot management. Woodlot owners
are evaluated based on their effort and commitment to: setting
and meeting sustainable goals for their land, improving their
knowledge or understanding of their forest land, or the forest
in general, improving the condition, access, and health of their
woodland, integrated resource management, with an emphasis on
wood production while considering other values such as wildlife
habitat, and woodlot management in general
Any resident who owns between 20 hectares (50 acres) and 400 hectares
(1000 acres) of woodland in Nova Scotia is eligible for the award.
Nominations are accepted at any Department of Natural Resources
office by January 31 of each year. Six regional winners are selected
prior to selecting the provincial winner.
During the field day, three tours will be held beginning at 10
am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm. The tours will highlight the work Mr. Hearns
has done including a stocked fire pond, softwood and hardwood
thinnings, wildlife cavity trees, his road, some small scale forestry
equipment, and lunch at his beautiful camp on Grand Lake.
To get to the field day look for signs leading to Virginia East
off highway 101 at the exit to Annapolis Royal.
