Exposed
Roots
An Eastern hemlock’s adaptable, extensive lateral root system lies
exposed, hinting at its history. The tree to grew upright while its roots
stretched downwards in search of more nutrients as the tree grew. But
why on top of the ground? The tree probably had its start in the nutrient
rich soil of a decaying stump. Over time, the original stump decayed out
leaving the exposed roots above the level of the ground. This phenomenon
is often referred to as "stilting".
