Wind Thrown-Root Plate
Wind can be a powerful agent of change in the forest. It is sometimes able to flatten several hectares of trees in just a few hours.

This “blowdown” occurred on the McCurdy Woodlot in December of 2000. It demonstrates how shallow rooted trees in open woodlands are prone to wind damage. To appreciate the size of this “root plate” note the metre stick at the base of the photograph.
