Legislation

There are three key pieces of legislation, provincially and federally, that pertain directly to the conservation, recovery, protection, and sustainable use of wildlife species and their habitats in Nova Scotia.  

NS Endangered Species Act
The Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act (NS ESA) was proclaimed in 1999 and was one of the first provincial endangered species acts in Canada.

NS Wildlife Act
The Nova Scotia Wildlife Act has been in place since 1989 and is responsible for the sustainable use and harvesting of NS wildlife species.

Federal Species at Risk Legislation
The federal government passed the Species At Risk Act (SARA) in June 2004.
