Nova Scotia's Old Growth Forests
Regardless of their form, old forests have been declining in abundance, becoming increasingly scarce and isolated over the past 400 years. In June, 1999 Nova Scotia introduced an Interim Old Forest Policy with the objective of maintaining or restoring old growth forest on eight percent (8%) of Crown land.
Nova Scotia has adopted a two stage approach in identifying old forests;
- 1) defining "old growth" as
forests over 125 years of age, and
2) implementing
a ranking system that scores forests in terms of their "old growth" values
and restoration potential.
A variety of tools are being developed to support the policy, including GIS search maps, field assessments, interactive record keeping, and reference reports.
