The Research and Communications Branch of the Alcohol and Gaming Division is responsible for research into gaming in other jurisdictions, the interest and reactions of the public towards gaming in Nova Scotia, and the social, health, justice, economic, and environmental impacts of gaming in Nova Scotia. This branch also coordinates all communications released by the Alcohol and Gaming Divsion.
The Communications Department is responsible for disseminating information to the public.
As well, the Communications Department is responsible for publishing a licencee newsletter to keep the lines of communication open between the Authority and the licencees, and to provide important messages to licencees.
Under section 56 of the Gaming Control Act, the Authority is mandated to:
(d) carry on a continuous study of the public interest and reaction of residents of the Province to existing and potential features of casinos, other lottery schemes and games of chance;
In rising to this challenge, the Authority has established a research program that provides some of the best "leading edge" research being done in gaming.
Some of the methods that have been included in this program include focus groups, interviews, and public opinion surveys. Alcohol and Gaming is committed to ensuring that its research program is not only realistically achievable, but also fiscally responsible.
Aside from research responsibilities, the Research Department also develops and maintains a research library. This library not only assists the Authority's researchers, but others conducting gaming research. The Communications and Research Branch is also responsible for the publication of the Alcohol and Gaming annual reports, including the Annual Gaming Report and the Annual Business Report.
The library serves an integral function in the Research department. It houses a combination of books, reports, gaming journals and periodicals related to gaming around the globe.
