Cambridge Mass

Jan 14 1884

Dear Sir,

In the absence of my niece who is traveling in Europe, your letter requesting her father's autograph has been put into my hands.

I have found the accompanying page in his hand-writing. It seemed to me especially fitting for you purpose as giving not only the autograph of the author of Evangeline but his own account of the origin of that poem.

I have pleasure in sending it to be placed in the collection of autographs belonging to the Provincial Library of Nova Scotia. I have added a signature of the poet.

And happening to have just come across a letter of Martin F. Tupper, author of "Proverbial Philosophy" relative to the same poem, I take the liberty to enclose it. With best wishes for the success & prosperity of your Institution.

I am, Sir,

Very Truly Yours

Sam Longfellow
