Effective Dates of Proclamations*

February 22, 1990,** to November 3, 2009

* The effective date of a proclamation of a statute is usually, but not necessarily, the same as the effective date of the statute. The effective date of a proclamation is frequently, but not necessarily, the same as the date the proclamation is issued. Please see notes below.

** The Revised Statutes, 1989, were proclaimed to come into force on Febraury 22, 1990.

NOTE - The following information is provided for your convenience only. Where accuracy is critical, please consult official sources.

The Executive Council (the Nova Scotia "Cabinet") normally meets once a week and the orders in council that result, plus any proclamations of statutes, are usually signed by the Lieutenant Governor the next day or within a few days. Consequently, this list will usually be updated on the same weekly basis.

The proclamations of Nova Scotia statutes (new statutes and amending statutes) are published in Part II of the Royal Gazette. The orders in council authorizing the proclamations can be searched on line. This list of proclamations is produced by the Office of the Legislative Counsel based on information provided weekly by the Executive Council Office. For up-to-date information, please contact the Executive Council Office.

Please also note:

Not all statutes are subject to proclamation. A statute may provide that it, or part of it, comes into force by proclamation or on a specified date, or both. To the extent that the statute is silent with respect to it, or part of it, coming into force, it comes into force on Royal Assent.

Except as otherwise noted, the date given is the effective date of the proclamation (not the date the proclamation is issued and not necessarily the effective date of the statute since the statute may specify an effective date in addition to being subject to proclamation). With few exceptions, the date a proclamation is issued is not given.

Where it is provided that a statute, or part of a statute, comes into force on a specified day or an earlier day by proclamation and an earlier day is not proclaimed, the specified day is given followed by "(not proclaimed in force; in force by operation of law)".

The presence of a statute below does not mean it is still in force -- the repeal may not be subject to proclamation and therefore not noted here.

Only statutes subject to proclamation, in whole or in part, and not proclaimed in force before February 22, 1990, are listed below (plus a few statutes subject to a particular event on or after that date).
