Honourable Alfie MacLeod
MLA - Cape Breton West

Born on March 10, 1956 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Educated in St. Peter’s, Richmond County. Has taken numerous courses related to safety and training, as well as an industry-related lab course at Cape Breton University.

MacLeod worked for 19 years at Cape Breton Development Corporation in a number of roles, including shepherd, looking after 1500 sheep for three years, worked underground as a surveyor, worked in quality control as a lab technician, training officer for surface operations and safety officer for surface operations.

Elected in a by-election in October of 1995 and served to March of 1998.

Employed by the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia from May 1998 until September 1999 as a Field Organizer. Worked for a period of time in Cape Breton Cabinet Office, then became Community Relations Manager for Ernst and Young at the dismantling of the Sydney Steel Plant.

Re-elected in 2006 and served as Government Caucus Chair. Elected as Speaker in October 2007.

MacLeod has a long history with the Progressive Conservative Party, serving in many roles from Constituency President to Provincial Party President, to Organizer. This year, 2008, is his 34th year of involvement with the Party.

Mr. MacLeod is a former school trustee, former Treasurer of Gabarus Volunteer Fire Department, a Board Member of the founding Board of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He has been an instructor of the Christopher Leadership Course and is a past Board Member of the Horizon Achievement Centre for Challenged Individuals, Past Vice-Chair of the Cape Breton Community Housing Association, past Member of Sydney Port Authority and Past Director of Two Rivers Wildlife Park. He is currently a member of the Planning Committee for Sydney Ports Day, the Building Committee of Zion Wesley Church, Member of the Masonic Lodge and Elder of Zion Wesley United Church.

Mr. MacLeod is married to Shirley and they have three children, Sandra, Jessica and Daniel. They reside in Gabarus Lake, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
