The Clerk's tradition reaches back in history nearly as far as the Speaker. The Chief Clerk and the Assistant Clerks are responsible, under the direction of the Speaker, for providing advice and support to the Speaker and the Members on procedural matters concerning the privileges, rules, usages and proceedings of the Assembly. They prepare the daily agenda for the House (The Order Paper), call the items of business in the House and officially count the votes of the Members. They are also responsible for preparing the Journals of the House of Assembly and other records of the House, and are responsible for the safekeeping of the Assembly's documents.
