About the Chief Inspector - Fuel Safety

The Chief Inspector's responsibilities and authority are derived from the Fuel Safety Regulations made pursuant to the Fire Safety Act. The main objective of this regulation is to ensure that all propane gas, natural gas, digester gas and landfill gas installations, in the province, are completed safely, in compliance with the Codes and Regulations, and by certified people.

The Regulation adopts the latest editions of the propane, natural gas, digester gas and landfill gas codes and makes any changes or additions to these codes as required. The Chief Inspector provides interpretations of these codes to engineers, consultants, contractors, inspectors, etc., and is the person responsible for the final interpretation of the codes and the regulations.

The Chief Inspector oversees the general direction of the inspection process throughout the Province. His staff members carry out audit inspections.

The Chief Inspector oversees the review and adoption of which Certification Organisations (i.e. CSA, ULC, Warnock Hershey, UL, ETL, etc. -- note that certification marks which do not carry a Canadian identifier in their name must be accompanied by a small "c" at the 8 O'clock position to be acceptable. This indicates they have been certified to Canadian Standards.) are acceptable within Nova Scotia. The Chief Inspector also determines which organisations are acceptable to do special inspections on fuel fired equipment in Nova Scotia.

The Chief Inspector oversees the process for certification of personnel working in the propane and natural gas industry and the licensing of any companies working with fuel fired equipment and systems.
