Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday - Statutory Holidays?

Good Friday (April 6, 2012) is one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code.

There are five general holidays listed in the Code: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas. These are the minimum number of holidays that employers must provide to employees. Many employers offer more paid holidays.

Good Friday is a designated retail closing day. Many retail businesses are prohibited from opening on Good Friday. Employees in such businesses have the right to refuse to work on that day if called into work while the store is closed.

Easter Sunday (April 8, 2012) is not one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code. It is, however, a designated retail closing day. Many retail businesses are prohibited from opening on Easter Sunday. Employees in such businesses have the right to refuse to work on that day if called into work while the store is closed.

Easter Monday (April 9, 2012) is not one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Labour Standards Code and it is not a designated retail closing day.
