The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission has embarked on a vision that places it on a path to excellence in its promotion and protection of human rights in the province. By building strong relationships with governments, academic institutions, community organizations and the public, the commission will be able to more effectively deliver on its dual mandate – the resolution of complaints and the promotion of systemic change through education, training and consultation.
The commission is faced with ever increasing complex and challenging human rights issues. Nova Scotia is striving to overcome a history of racism and discrimination that requires ongoing efforts to promote healing, reconciliation and positive change. The commission has a central role to play in those efforts as we all strive to create a Nova Scotia where there is equality of opportunity for everyone.
During the years ahead there will be an increasing emphasis on partnering with organizations to promote and protect those most vulnerable to human rights abuses in Nova Scotia.
The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission works to protect people from discrimination in this province in accordance with the Human Rights Act. It also protects people from retaliation against them for filing a complaint with the commission or co-operating with a human rights investigation.
The commission's central office is located in Halifax, with regional offices in Sydney and Digby to serve people across the province.
Commission staff provide information to help people resolve issues of discrimination. Staff also conduct investigations on complaints of discrimination and will refer cases to mediation where appropriate.
The commission plays an active role in providing education on human rights and diversity through training, public events, and publications. It works with employers, service providers, companies, government departments, and community organizations to promote human rights. It provides consultation, education, and assistance with policy development and dispute resolution to create more inclusive work environments.
