Volunteerism and the Voluntary Sector in Nova Scotia

Recognition of Volunteers

Volunteers contribute their time, passion and expertise in their community every day, making a significant impact on the lives of Nova Scotians. The Province of Nova Scotia appreciates this valuable contribution. Through events such as the International Day of the Volunteer, National Volunteer Week, and the Provincial Volunteer Awards, the province strives to raise the profile of volunteers and to honour their contributions.

The United Nations has designated December 5th International Volunteer Day. The role of the volunteer is celebrated and acknowledged on this special day, bringing international attention to the valuable contribution volunteers make in every country. The role of the Canadian volunteer working abroad is also highly appreciated.

National Volunteer Week, April 19 – 25, 2009, pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who donate their time and energy to Canadian communities. Local communities across Canada celebrate the role of the volunteer through a variety of events and activities. For more information, visit Volunteer Canada's website. In Nova Scotia, local municipal events are held to acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts and contributions of volunteers

While many events will occur throughout the week of April 19 - 25, 2009, the signature event which kicks off the celebration in Nova Scotia is the Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony, now in its 35th year. This year, the Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony and Luncheon is being held April 14th at the Westin Nova Scotian.

The 35th Annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony is hosted by the provincial government, and coordinated by Recreation Nova Scotia. This year's event will recognize more than 70 volunteers from Nova Scotian communities.

Volunteer Representative Awards:
Award recipients are selected for their leadership, vision, passion, and dedication to their community. Municipalities nominate one volunteer from each of their communities to become award recipients. Volunteers come from a wide range of volunteer sectors, such as sport and recreation, volunteer fire departments, religion, health, education and schools, and international development.
